Day5 feb-28

Today’s task was straightforward, as I compared my version of the article to their official designer’s, I concluded several design choices they had and was told to create another article to see if the design will be better.

the draft I was given is about “the summer is almost at an end, it’s time to have one last BBQ party” with 3 of the recipe from LeeKimKee as usual. As soon as I read the title, I’m already imagining 3 scenarios in mind, Beach BBQ, park BBq, or backyard BBQ party. As I wanted a transition between summer and autumn, I needed some obvious elements like the grass color, therefore I chose the head theme with a park BBQ.

Hence I started to create the top image, which all LeekimKee has, I used some simple shapes and colors to structure the frame of the picture, and when I’m satisfied I started searching for assets on Canva, as LeeKimKee’s posts in the past all had illustration as the main style of asset, Canva is the best asset site I could think off.

With several asset grinding, I managed to pack all assets into one image(pic1), when I asked for feedback, they said the picture dose does not feel lively. And the color was a bit off. So I searched for more assets, added more people and found some more vibrant assets, and adjusted the location of each asset (Pic2). now I’m ready to move on.

With the rest of the article, I chose to keep using the theme as the template where it is on the grass and have 1-2 related assets on each section to decorate the post yet make it feel too tight. And with the recipe post, I tried to mimic the slide effect by making that whole section into one layer and wider than the canvas, so when exported it will be a separate image to put in and allows you to swipe.

Day4 Feb-27

MY work

The Work desginer made

This is the second week of placement, since I finished half of the LeeKimKee article last week, I decided to work on the second half straight away, but I was a bit unfamiliar with the tool again since it has been 4 days since the last time I did this so it took me a while to get back to the normal pace.

The second half of the article is the recipe part in the script, according to their previous design, the recipe is normally shown with interactions such as ‘slide to view more’ or ‘ tap to unlock’ etc. Hence we were required to make the article a way that it is easier to make the interaction with it. The solution I found was, to leave a blank area on the main article canvas, measure its height of it, and create a new canvas with the same height but double/triple the width (according to how much informations are there. The wide info out of screen will act as the second/3rd page of the section that allows the group to place it on. To mack sure the sliding page will look smooth, I had the copy of the background locked and worked my way according to that, then merged all layers into 1 then drag across to see the effect.

As I’m done, I showed the supervisor my version of the article. instead of feedback, I was given their current designer’s design, and told me to make a comparison and provide feedback too. After a brief look, it is found that my decorative asset was too big that it is hard to balance it out with other assets making the article ended up looking too plain. And to be not afraid to use the decorative font to highlight the keyword. I quickly note that down so I could remember that with my next work. But i realized the color that the designer used was too dark, unlike the past articles in Leekimkee. They agreed with my opinion and said they will inform the designer about this next time she works.

Day1 Feb-20

It all begins with an idea.

After months of searching for an opportunity in a Digital Media internship, I’ve found and got offered a placement from Lion Media Group. An interview was hosted and I got informed that this placement is all about designing and making a visual article for the Wechat article accounts. and a little test was scheduled, which was making my version of the article by the assets given.

Images below are the work I made, the last image is the screenshot of theasset given.

Today is the first day I start my internship at Lion Media Group as a graphic designer. But due to the urgent incident of PTV, I was 50 mins late. Not a great start for a placement, but I managed to communicate with my supervisor and co-workers to let them know beforehand.

Today’s task was to be familiar with the style of article they produce on the WeChat account, ‘WoS_official AU’. I was told to conclude with a summary of design choices.

After that, the supervisor told me to try to remake the test article I made after reviewing the articles. I realized the use of font style, font size, color, and image scaling and size is all over the place. I spend the rest of the shift time, slowly refining one of the panels, and I learned many Adobe Photoshop skills during refinement.

At the end of the day, I presented the work I refined to the supervisor. He said it is getting better, but it is not enough. I’ve used a lot of my brain to redesign to a point i can’t see anything new now, so i decide to call it a day(as the time is almost near the end).

Hours Worked: 8 Hours.

Day 2 FEB-21

It all begins with an idea.

Today is the second day of the Internship. Today got an allocated table and seat in the office and was told from now on this is my place.

Today’s task was set to mimic two of the design they had before to be more familiar with their style of design for WoS. As the supervisor could tell, I’m not used to designing luxury graphics before by the work I showed him.

There are two works I got to mimic, each has a specific style, and different difficulties to recreate. One of them is compiling all of the material using shape assets and big clear asset visuals. And the other is using various Adobe Suit skills to create a background environment to fit the theme and the style of the watch.

It took me roughly 4-5 hours to recreate the two post bit by bit. Personally, I think I did a great job mimicking the two works. After getting approved by the supervisor he told me to try to recreate my test post again after getting used to the design. After mimicking two articles I realized the general visual style of the post are being the use of gradients, no more than 3 colors, and a big clean visual, so that’s exactly what I changed about my work. My supervisor said I have improved a lot and approved my final design.

Shift worked: 8 hours.

Total: 16 hours

Day3 feb-22

It all begins with an idea.

Today I was given the task to design a template for one of the articles from LeeKimKee. The style of the post is very different compared to WoS which was the previous one I mimicked. The post of LeeKimKee has very vibrant colors and consists of various picture assets and cartoon-looking characters with specially designed fonts, the overall post is very lively.

After a brief look at some LeeKimKee posts, I figured it may be better to make it With Adobe Illustrator, as it can make some custom assets with the tools straight away. As the post is about the vegetarian ingredient and the recipes, I chose the main colorway with green and a very dim but warm yellow. Also made the first half of the post with the theme of Wikipedia as the text given was very informative. So I created assets like a notebook, pencil, eraser, etc.. to decorate the article. However soon I realized that I am very not used to Adobe Illustrator, which caused me to make the article at a slower pace. maybe 3x slower than me making stuff on Photoshop. By the time of finishing the first half of the article, it is already the end of the day.

Shift worked: 8hrs

Total shift worked:24hrs

p.s As there is an event happening tomorrow, the majority of the time was me helping to carry heavy props up and down.
